the Company of the Black Spear
The Company of the Black Spear is a not-for-profit living history organization dedicated to the authentic recreation of an English military retinue during the early fifteenth century (c. 1400–1420). Through carefully researched portrayals of soldiers, camp followers, and military life on campaign, we seek to present a historically accurate interpretation of the people, equipment, and daily experiences of the period. By combining scholarly research with immersive living history, we bring the medieval world to life through public demonstrations, educational programs, and historical events throughout the eastern United States.
What is a Retinue and who is in it?
The English retinue was the principal military organization of English armies during the early fifteenth century. Raised through contracts of indenture, a retinue was a temporary military company assembled under the authority of a captain for the duration of a campaign or period of military service. Its ranks included men-at-arms and archers, as well as servants, craftsmen, clerks, surgeons, and other support personnel. Each contributed to the retinue's ability to campaign effectively by ensuring it could march, fight, and sustain itself in the field.
